You have 4000 dollars. You’re mechanically and electronicly adept, and time, space and tools aren’t much of an issue. You also have a reliable DD. Which do you choose?

Personally I’d buy an 86-91 560SEL if I could find one in decent condition for $4k.

first link is dead.

And blue or last black.

E34 because classy.

There is a nice one that’s silver (imo one of the best colors for a German car) for 3.5k. Unfortunately I already ran it past my SO and didn’t generate much interest. It’s going to be both of ours so it has to be something were both enthuastic about. I also strongly suggested a nice early 00s xj8 but she prefered the older ones.

i found a 1990 in memphis this summer for $3k but i’m broke so....

Blue bc of course I would.

Good! Choices are difficult things.

STRONGLY suggest AVOID XJ8s...
they’re BEAUTIFUL cars... when they are running.

let us rob a bank together and split it 50-50

I’m saying the link doesn’t lead to anything.

If ac works that’s what I’m pushing for. It has one of my favorite colors for cars. (Glacier blue metallic)

Um... it’s gonna be more like 90-10. But hey! I’m down!

Yeah the listing got taken down, one less choice to make!

i’ve been lusting after xj6 recently so that followed by the 540i
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:22 |

Silver because more money for repairs and upgrades and I really just like the style.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:23 |
|
It is nice and plush looking. Style 32s and a v8. What’s not to love?
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:24 |

So far away, and more than I’d want to pay for that particular model. Not that they won’t find a buyer at that price.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:26 |

Would you go with the green with worse interior for 1k less? Or the black with quite nice interior.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:27 |

E34 all day. Spend $3k to upgrade it.

Blue, or this:

or this...
http://bellingham.craigslist.org/cto/5163661066…
my ‘92 S had over 400K miles on it when we parted ways... I miss that car...
If I wasn’t actively saving for a FoRS I’d be looking at a fly out-drive-back for that 164...
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:30 |

Why does distance matter?
This car was the most expensive one around here, but also the only one in reasonable condition. I’d definitely have to negotiate the price down before I’d be willing to buy it.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:30 |

Green without a doubt!
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:31 |

The gtv is above budget and I’m fairly good at financial self discipline otherwise I’d consider it. I had searched 164s but nothing came up for salem, the link you posted is definately worth a look.

if you drive it, run it up to 6750 RPM once for me....
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:35 |

the jag all day. you;d have a grand to spend to fix it up. also its a mutha f’in jag. Pass the grey poupon bitch!!!! i really dunno. your’probably in for a headache with the jag but that could be true with the BMW too. I’d just love to have a Jab like that.

None of the above. But how about these?

no xj6s with the actual 6?
you say you have skills with electrics and mechanicals... use them!
actually the i6s in the xj6 are pretty solid, from what i hear.
in either case, the jags exude style and character, and between the two, the answer is always BRG.
i promise you’ll get more thumbs up in either of those in one week than you will get in your entire ownership of one of bmws. the e34 is interesting, but a little bland, and the e39 is just a used bmw.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:00 |

Blue or silver. While BMWs are more expensive to repair, they’ll break far less than a Jag. I’m biased towards silver, though, since I also DD an E34.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:03 |

Unpopular opinion time, I don’t really like 60s mustangs. As with most cars there are nice examples and I understand the appeal, but not my style.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:06 |

I would prefer to drive it home, and from a reasonable distance, or along I5 (familiar roads)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And just because....
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:11 |

They just happened to be the best two of that particular vintage (the green because.. well, and the black because of the interior and I’ve seen it in person already), otherwise I agree. I’ve never heard bad things about the 4.0
As far as attention, less is better honestly, when I drive my red e24 I feel like someone’s always watching. It also gets very tiring when every honda, bro truck, and panel van wants to test your vehicle.

Blue. Black says it was deleted by author.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:13 |

I imagine they will probably cost more to repair engine wise, but less on everything else. Silver e34 gets my number 1 pick so far because of overall value and color.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:14 |

Blue, but I didn’t look at the links.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:16 |

This plus
Would basically be the look id be going for with the green one. OEM wheels for winter tires. Something muscle-y or vintage for summer.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:20 |

Pretty much. And for $1,000 of your $4,000 budget, you have a lot of overhead to fix any possible issues.

And a lot of cash for improvement and continued maintenence afterwards once it all checks out.

I never realized Dr. Zoidberg was so sassy! :D
![]() 09/18/2015 at 15:27 |

Yep it must’ve been taken down within 15 minutes of my post. For anyone curious it was a black e34 540i with 140k I believe, fairly clean tan interior, working a/c, and on style 7s for 3k

Am I the only one choosing green?
![]() 09/18/2015 at 16:33 |

youre
kind of
in luck wrt muscley wheels. the hubs on these jags are 5x4.75, which are nearly completely phased out, but happened to be the same pattern as some 70s-80s-90s GMs, like the camaro and corvette.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 16:37 |

One other so far.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 23:53 |

none of the above.
i’d get a Datsun 200B.
because classic shitbox.

I thought this was just a fantastical exercise?
![]() 09/19/2015 at 05:31 |

More or less. I don’t like to talk about me specifically buying or doing something until it’s actually done, as I can be rather fickle. That said, I was interested in seeing what oppo thought.

I can’t be mad at that. I wish 510s were still obtainable.
